When a couple struggles to conceive, the conversation almost always starts with her. Her cycle. Her hormones. Her age. Meanwhile, he hands over a semen sample, hears "count looks okay," and that's usually the end of it. That's a problem — because male factors contribute to 50% of infertility cases. And sperm count? It's only part of the story. 🔬 WHAT ACTUALLY MATTERS IN SPERM QUALITY A complete semen analysis looks at four key parameters: • Count — how many sperm are present • Motility — can they swim? • Morphology — are they shaped correctly to penetrate an egg? • DNA Fragmentation — is the genetic material intact? That last one is the most overlooked — and arguably the most important. Sperm DNA fragmentation above 30% is associated with impaired fertilization, poor embryo development, and increased miscarriage risk. A man can have a "normal" sperm count and still have a significant fertility problem. ⚠️ THE HIDDEN CULPRITS Sperm production takes 72–90 days. That means everything a man does — what he eats, how he sleeps, what he's exposed to — shows up in his sperm three months later. The biggest drivers of poor sperm quality: • Smoking (damages DNA directly) • Obesity (converts testosterone to estrogen, disrupting sperm production) • Heat exposure (laptops, hot tubs, tight clothing) • Chronic stress • Sedentary lifestyle • Environmental toxins These aren't just inconveniences. They're root causes. ✅ THE GOOD NEWS: THIS IS FIXABLE Male fertility is more adaptable than most people realize. Three months of targeted lifestyle change — better nutrition, movement, stress reduction, key supplements like CoQ10, zinc, folate, and omega-3s — can produce measurable improvements in sperm quality. But you can't fix what you haven't measured. If you or someone you know is navigating fertility challenges, make sure the male side of the equation gets a full evaluation — not just a count, but motility, morphology, and DNA fragmentation. Know the full picture. Then fix the engine. |
